Special Abilities of North Texas and their incredible team provide an array of day programs for adults with developmental disabilities. For Jordan Drake, now Chief Executive Officer, it is clear that this no job for her, but complete devotion and a labor of love for every adult she meets on a daily basis. What started as a staff nurse position more than 14 years ago has turned into a daily hands-on approach for her and all the stakeholders involved in the center.

The center has an incredible team, and everyone in leadership positions is inspired to continue putting time at the center for stability for tomorrow.

Program Manager Rosina Bustos is the best example of that inspiration as she guides her clients.  ACEs -Adults Creating Excellence -are not just clients." It's more personal than that.

Special Abilities moved to Lewisville a few years ago, and they changed the name to Special Abilities of North Texas. They transitioned away from daycare to the array of programs and activities that we see today. The goal is to improve the quality of life for each adult client while avoiding institutionalization, long-term care facilities, or even removal from the daily lives of their families. The focus is to give them opportunities to remain in their homes, or to get job skills and live in a group house.

The programs are customized to each client’s special and unique abilities. They are broad in scope and encompass creative skills, life skills, job readiness, and wellness. Each program is designed to improve physical health and emotional well-being, along with strengthening self-esteem and confidence.

The core programs offered each weekday from 9am to 3:30pm are:

CREATIVE SKILLS

  • Exploration of various art forms

  • Emotional expression and cognitive development

  • Enhancing self-esteem and social skills

  • Multi-sensory experiences

LIFE SKILLS

  • Effective communication and social skills

JOB READINESS SKILLS
